beginners class

At the beginning level of training, students will learn a variety of skills and techniques. Since Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses heavily on ground fighting techniques, it is important at the beginner's level to learn to get to the ground safely, as well as establishing a good position for defense and offense. Falls, rolls, takedowns, and control positions (such as guard position, mount position, side control) are included in this process. Gaining a superior position is key in winning a fight on the ground.

For self-defense purposes, escapes and counters are also introduced at this level. When being attacked by an opponent (who may be larger than you), it is important to learn how to escape safely. Once out, it may be necessary to implement a submission hold such as a joint lock or a chokehold, which are also introduced at this level.

One major benefit Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers is the ability to train at full speed and power while allowing students to "tap out," thus greatly reducing the likelihood of injury. This is crucial when learning self-defense skills, as the only way to prepare for a situation involving an assault is to practice against a fully resisting teammate. During class, students will have the opportunity to free spar (called "rolling") to allow them to test the techniques they have learned against a live opponent. This is where students find out what is working and what is not working in their game, and allows true growth and development as a martial artist.
